| Maxon C4D 10, for immediate release...
Well, I might as well start the first thread here. Looks like C4D10 is a huge facelift. http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/...ewinr10_e.html What do you think? I like the look and feel of the interface, icons and all, flat and unshaded. Carrara 6 should have this kind of unshaded 2d effect. http://www.maxon.net/pages/images/pr...nterface_e.jpg |

IMHO, 2D icons may be more easier to understand (and faster to do! It took me a lot of time to realise Hexagon ones...) but in C4D R10, You have too much style difference between the icons. Some are in full 2D, and other includes 3D content, not in the same style... And i think I'll also switch to 2D icons in my next work... |

Actually, I do the same thing in Windows XP. It is adjusted for best performance. Meaning, all icons are unshaded, shadows and animation effects are turned off completely. I don't even use a wallpaper background for my desktop. It's completely blank. ![]() I favor iconified interfaces. (No, not the TrueSpace kind.) They look friendlier: Hexagon, Carrara, Vue, CAD apps, Solid modelers, Rhino, etc. Textual interfaces really turns me off: Silo, Lightwave, XSI, Blender (which is my main app, ironically.) Thomas, now that you're no longer part of the Carrara team, who do you think will design C6's UI?

| Rhino4 or C4D10?
If I'd have to choose between buying Rhino4 and C4D10, I'll most likely have a hard time deciding which. Both are in the same price range. First of all, Rhino 4 is just a modeler. You still need a renderer like Flamingo. Considering Rhino is mainly used for industrial/mechanical design offices, I won't have to buy it anyway if I were hired by a company who uses Rhino. Which means the free Rhino demo is enough for learning purposes. Yup, if I have that kind of money, I'd finally pick C4D10. ![]() But then, I'd have to wait till C6 is released. |

C4D surely suits me, surely... My intel core 2 duo too... But...I'm not rich enough. Too bad for me... BTW it seems to be a great update.

| rhino nurbs import to C4D?
i have been interested in C4D for a while, but purchased Carrara earlier this year for a very low price. I thought C5P was able to import 3dm nurbs but in fact everything is meshed (quite inefficiently) while being imported, so i am considering C4D once again. My biggest concern is the ability to import Rhino 3dm files directly as Nurbs. Does anybody know if C4D XL can do this? Is there updateable file linking? I searched all morning online but can't find any news more recent than 2004. Thanks... |

This is what I've been curious about. Some apps purport to have NURBS such as Maya, XSI, Lightwave, Max, C4D, yet I haven't heard anyone who can open Rhino files in one of these apps without having to convert it to an OBJ, DXF, 3DS, etc. I'm curious as to what separates Rhino NURBS from Maya NURBS, or any of the mentioned apps.

Cinema 4D has a really good feel to it and is really well designed. But it still can't do decent fillets. Or perhaps somebody can show me otherwise? ![]() I try filleting the intersection between two overlapping primitives by using a boolean union operation and having it auto select the resulting edges. Then I extrude the edges, but the result is nearly always quite messy. ![]() Now take MoI! That program makes beautiful fillets. Well sometimes it fails to make any at all, but when it does make them, they're lovely! |

rhino nurbs are, IMO, not supported in any program, as Nurbs; I mean, objects modelled in nurbs are converted in poly to be rendered; C4ds and Lightwave does'nt have any nurbs, although the word nurbs, or hyper nurbs, is sometimes used for subd-patches; but they are'nt nurbs, like in rhino, amapi pro, or Moi; by the way, I 'm wrong: there is one program rendering nurbs as they are, without conversion, and it's realsoft... but I never try it, and don't know if it's native nurbs of the program, or imported ones... in my opinion, using intensively rhino, carrara import the mesh with a fine smooth appearance, but you have to apply an extra smooth in lightwave; don't know, for C4d; (but, as I have Bodypaint in standalone, it is probably fine).. Rhino 4 is going to be very interesting for users of zbrush, as some of the main commands are operating on heavy mesh like those produced in zbrush: trim, split, and booleans; also a lot of curves works on meshes, allowing to work simultoneously on mesh and nurbs; finnally, via the SMURF plug in, it's relativeley easy to convert mesh in nurbs, wich is interestring once again for zbrush mesh, to work "further" wirth the easiness of nurbs.. |

| Yeah. Especially since you need SPD and SSS in a lot of projects. I wouldnt' say GI is necessary. I can't believe they bundled SKY and Pyrocluster in there though. Lots of things I think should just be in the core.

Well the way you describe what you did, there's no polygonal modeler that'll give you any good result like that... You won't get anything good making booleans and filleting them that way. Polygonal and subdivision modelling is totally differents from Nurbs modelling, which what you have in CAD packages. To make good fillets in subdivision modelling, you have to cope with the smoothing... That'll come with time...

It looks like an excellent version with the addition of more character animation tools, better Bodypaint3D and the UI is much more userfriendly. I have already place my upgrade order to the Studio Bundle from my current version of 9.6 studio bundle. Now is just a matter of waiting for its final release. Ringo |

Just wanted to put a word in for those considering purchasing Cinema 4D. The upgrade structure for Cinema is horrible. For instance, an upgrade from version 8 of Cinema 4D Core is the same cost as just purchasing it new. I was planning on purchasing core, but definetly not worth it.

...and now Bodypaint is the same price than the core itself (as it's the same thing) : so it's a 50% price increase vs. the previous version .. otherwise in Europe upgrade from core 8 (480 EUR) is less expensive than the brand new one (685 EUR) , but that's a lot...

Must also consider C4D's frequent (and not particularly cheap) half-point upgrades, as well as the cost of additional modules (which typically also must be upgraded). Cinema 4D really is a very fine program, but Maxon's pricing (for all the reasons above) makes it hard to choose over some other very decent programs (at or below their pricing). rj
