You're right - I'm going to fix this. First time around, I thought I pushed down all the blacks. Must have goofed somethin' up.

I'll post my results later-

Well, unless I'm missing something (and I probably am :D) I can't seem to get that Universal Manipulator icon to light up so I can choose it, and I don't know how you got the red lines to show up on the cylinder (I'm new to this, so I'm probably not using the right terminology). It looks like the tut starts out in the Assembly room and then goes to the Modelling room, but when I do this, the screen is blank in the Modelling room, my cylinder "screen" shrinks down into the lower right hand corner. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Is there a Carrara for Dummies book?

Thanks!

Cyhiraeth:
The universal manipulator is only in C5Pro. I forgot about this one, sorry.
The cylinder is created in the vertex modeler, not in the assebly room.

The bevel tool and extract around apparently is not available in the standard version 5. I was able to use the fillet tool which gave the same result as in the tutorial, but can't figure out how to do the extract around when making the wax dripping in the standard version. Any help there?

Whoisit: no, sorry. Most of the modeling is based on the new modeling tools of Carrara 5, and SSS is also a new feature... Perhaps it's time to switch to C5 ?

Not just C5, but this tutorial requires C5Pro.

The spline tools in the VM are only available in the Pro version, if I am not mistaken.

It's easy for us tutorial makers to get confused when we post tutorial restrictions and similar issues.

Selecting multiple loops at once

I don't know if anyone reads these forums anymore or not since DAZ bought Carrara, so here's hoping someone sees this:

I am a very new user of Carrara 5 Std. In the candle tutorial, you show 2 loops of edges selected at the same time before you apply a bevel after the smoothing step. I can only select 1 loop, then when I click on another one, the first one goes away. I tried holding down the shift key but that selects faces and not just lines. The control key doesn't work either.

Can someone tell me how to select more than one loop of edges at a time?

I am using a PC, not a Mac.

Thank you.

Hello and Welcome aboard !

There is always an active community here, and it's not DAZ which will change something ;)

To select only edges and not faces between the edges, select the "edge" mode at the right of the modeling room, by clicking a little icon. (there are 4 icons : "face", "edge", "point", and "all", the default mode is "all")

Thank you so much for your previous answer. That helped and I was able to select multiple loops. Next question/problem:

Well, after looking through the whole program, I see the version I have doesn't even have a bevel tool, and now after further reading, it seems this tutorial is for the Pro version. It's strange to me that a thing such as a bevel tool isn't available in the standard version. Why isn't such a basic modeling tool in this program?

How can I do the edge then without the bevel?

Sorry to be a bother. I'm very new to 3D (1 year), and brand new to modeling.

Thanks again.

I don't now why they don't implement the bevel tool in the std version, but effectly, Bevel is only available in the Pro version.

To do the edges without the bevel, you have to manually create them. So, use the "Add" tool, and add points all around your candle. An edge is automatically create between 2 new points, but you will have to use the "link" tool to create the last edge.

Wow, what a great tutorial. I'm brand new to Carrara 5 and the video tutorial is fantastic. I was trying to go through the manual but it was somewhat overwhelming, especially for me. I'm disabled with multiple sclerosis and my eye scanning is jerky which makes reading a slow process, especially with an 893 page manual .

Anyway, the video tut allowed me to just jump right into it and even though I had to figure out how some the tools worked it was WAY COOL!

One tool seems to be missing for me, the "Extract Around" tool. Is that a Carrara Pro tool only? If so is there a work-around for it in Carrara?

Thanks for the great tut and the great forum
Mike

Thanks for the tutorial.. I bought this app some time back and have not been able to do a darn thing in it. The manual ...ah anyway, this looks to be the right place to get beyong importing meshes!
