CGSphere Competition

Found this competition via CGNetworks but they don't support Carrara format yet.

Is anyone tech minded enough to convert the scene for Carrara users? It's beyond me as to how to do it. Thought it would be a nice challenge for us to show what Carrara was capable of.

Hi Mike,

Downloaded the wavefront file but it doesn't have the camera setup. Tried to position a conical camera at roughly the right distance but couldn't get it right. There is supposed to be a pre-rendered file for you to align the scene but I couldn't see it. Hoping someone more experienced with Carrara could help set up the scene.

Cheers

Use one of the existing gallery images as a backdrop to align the Carrara camera for now. I will convert it this evening when I have some time if someone still needs it. I think it will be an interesting challenge.

Here is a quick setup. Had to scale the objects up to try and get a match on the camera zoom and angle. Carrara's camera doesnt work like Lightwave. You can tweak it and get the camera and objects how you want them.

The grid wont show up unless you render at .5 object accuracy. Hope it helps.

Thanks Donnie. I have down loaded the scene you setup but have a problem with the aspect ratio. The rules say the final render must be 800 x 800, so when I change the output in Carrara the camera is not aligned the way you set it but has dropped backwards exposing the ground plane.

Looks as if they have server worries on the site. 500,000 hits a day!!!!

If you can find any more time to possibly adjust the scene I would be eternally grateful!!! They are requesting conversions to other software on the site, don't know if you want ot talk with them direct perhaps? They give a namecheck to all the conversion folk.

Cheers

Part of the problem is that this scene in Lightwave has a camera focal length of 20mm and a zoom factor of 2.67. In Lightwave you have access to the zoom factor, focal length, horizontal FOV and vertical FOV. I know that Lightwave cameras relate to real world cameras because you set the DOF based on the physical back of the camera. How that correlates to Carrara's camera is beyond me at the moment.

I think the best we can do without an explanation from the Carrara developers is to just try and match it through trial and error. I have run into this problem before. When trying to do challenges from other sites. It is hard to match the camera angle in Carrara.

Good luck.

I have played around a little but what with all the competion parameters they have set as to how you can't adjust the camera focus etc etc. Think I might leave it alone for now.

Thanks for your help Donnie! Weird camera in Carrara, who knows how a developers mind works? It has inspired me to create a new abstract picture, so something good has come out of it from my viewpoint!

Cheers
