| texture map with alpha question
I'm confounded. I need to make a bag of chips. the idea, however, is that the bag is foil and there will be ink printed onto the foil. The graphics I'm getting have alpha areas where there will be no ink (ie where the foil will show through). So how the hell do I make this happen? I feel like I've tried everything. If I bring the artwork in with alpha, it just makes that part of the bag see through when what I NEED is for it to allow the next layer down to come through. I've also tried bringing it in with white where the alpha is and checking "white is invisible" but that won't work as there is white in the design, plus it seems to have the same behavior. I've also tried bringing it in with no alpha and using the same texture map as an alpha layer but that has the same effect as the first option. in my layers list I have a layer of chrome (multi-channel) with another layer using the texture map (also multi-channel). If I remove the texture map layer, the bad looks chrome, just like it should. Please Help!!! thanks in advance |

I had a similar issue, but mine was trying to render a label onto a beer bottle. I was under a tight deadline and have had trouble with this before, but was always able to find a suitable work around. Since I had transparency on the bottle my label was also rendering with the transparency, not what I wanted. I ended up just rendering in two passes and assembling in Photoshop. Since you're not using any transparency on your main shader you might be able to get away with using the layer list and add a projection map texture. A flat projection might work for you. Use "white is invisible" and make sure your artwork is a single layer photoshop image (Carrara might be able to handle a multilayered file, but I've never tried it - thought it might task the program too much). The oven is a sample of this kind of operation, my file is set up to use two projection maps - one for the front, one for the top. In order to safegaurd my client I've isolated the image to show the labels around the dials. They are the mapped images - There's also a logo which isn't visible. Hope this helps! BTW, this is all using the latest version of Carrara. |

the layer list is ok only when you have multidomains or multi parts (to set in the VM room). you can't make layer list with only one domain because they will overlapp they must be "applied" to an existing group or shading domain which must be differents. (imho) |

You can use the opacity mask channel to achieve this I believe. I used it on a hat for one of the skater I did, its a quick way to add stickers and labels to things.I've attached the shader tree if this helps For the beer bottle example in the labels shader you could give it a little bump and change the highlights and stuff to make it appear like a paper label and it would only affect the area governed by the opacity mask. |

Hi guys, Please excuse me for posting a reply which is off the thread topic but I'm new to the forum and don't seem to be able to start a new thread. I just want to ask a question and don't know how to do it. My question is: Is it possible to place a 2D jpeg, pic, psd, tiff or pict into Carrara and turn it into a 3D object? If so, how? If not, is there another way to put a 2D graphic into Carrara and make it a 3D object. I'm using a G5 with tiger and the Carrara 5 demo at the moment. This is one of the tests I'm doing with it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. Steve |

thanks for all the replies. I ended up just putting in a silver gradient in the texture map to simulate a chrome/metal finish in the area I needed. not ideal but I didn't have time to try the other options. However, I'll be sure to try using the opacity setting the next time I need to do this as that seems to be exactly what I need. |
