Whats the proper process for rendering an image then compositing in photo

Is there a good way to get perfect results for compositing things like hair over another image in photoshop? I am a newbie and all I have been doing is rendering to .psd with alpha channel selected, then opening in photoshop, then selecting the alpha channel in the channel list, then using load selection. somethign tells me this isnt ideal, since it leaves fringes around hair objects, while if i render to png in poser, there is no such problem.
Thanks,
Jarrett
