Is There a way to hide the hdri background, but still receive the hdri lighting to the scene? I would like a different background, but the hdri map I use is good for the light. Any ideas?

Yes.. Check out the Global Illumination stock scene it does exactly that.

Maybe, place your HDRI on the Background, and then activate backdrop and use whatever color you want...??
