| Importing elevation data
I'm trying out for the first time Carrara 5. I'd like to make terrain models of real places but can't find away to import data. I've tried importing polylines from Autocad 2004 and 2000 but they don't seem to appear in the work space? The polylines represent contours and have a z coordinate for elevation and I'd like to use them to make a mesh. Is this possible? Is it possible to import points to give height information? OR - Does anyone have another method for creating accurate terrains of real places. The terrain modeler is great for ceating fantacy places but what do you do for real places? Any suggestions greatfully received. Many thanks |

You can get--for free--all the radar maps for most of the world--with water levels etc. Also a huge amount of ESRI stuff, also for free. The first thing to do is go to the Digital Carvers Guild site, read all about the Ground Control plug in for Carrara. BUY it! (Down load the tutes)It gives access to huge amounts of stuff. The GC stuff gives leads to the radar sites and how to use. Also, visit ESRI and get a free download of the app ARC Explorer. A whole new world awaits you--now you will, almost, be able to see which paper I read each morning! An update of ArcExplorer to 9.2 will be available soon which adds 3D viewing capability to the App. WOW stuff! |
