Interesting results, especially the fact that the tile size can improve the rendering time. The video is a must see for the Carrara's geeks !

I have wondered how good the grid would work. I was told by the Evoia techs that dual core CPUs use two nodes and so does a dual CPU system, like dual Zeons. I was told it is best if all the computer on the the Grid have the same specs. Having said that I think it would be good to test out the Grid with 20 Dell 3.0 GHZ Celeron system with 512 MB of RAM. I say test Carrara with 5 Dell systems not using the Grid. Then use the grid with 10 Dell systems. Then use the Grid with 20 Dell systems. I think we might see the the render time cut in half when going from 5 to 10 to 20 systems. It would let us know just how efficient the Gird is. I say use 20 Cheap Dells because I can buy them Cheaper than I can build them and they will have the same specs. The main Carrara work Station should Use Dual Xeons but you keep that one off the Grid. 25 Dell Celeron system at $249.99 should make for a decent render ranch. I would hate to mix and match CPU and RAM for the systesm on the Grid.

I rendered a short 10 second clip at 640 X 480 at 30 FPS and it took about 24 hours to render on a 3.2 GHZ system with 756 MB of RAM. I would like to think 25 Dells with 3.0 GHZ Cleron and 512 of RAM would shorten it from 24 hours to about 2-3 hours. I admit it is still along redner time for 10 second worth of video andI think in order to do short 10-20 minute animations a 100 Gird render ranch would be needed. The 10 second clip had a lot of Camera pans along with chrome and glass objects.

Nice work renderfred, its answered a lot of questions for me on whether I should buy more computers. Unfortunately the answer is yes, but not yet.

Very nice link...something I had been looking for in a thread I started on comparative speeds last week.

The only downside is you can now see how long it would still take to render your own 20 minute masterpiece even with a small render farm Gonna be a while 'til any of us can take on Pixar

andywright,

I have thought about trying to offer video production and animation as service. The Grid sounds good but I think if I were to offer animation services I would need at least 100 computers linked together on the Grid. I admit, computers are getting faster and in another 10 years 25 cheap computers might be enough for Pixar but 100 would be even better.
