Translucency

I have read through the manual but can find no reference to the translucency section other than that in the SSS.

IS there some setting that needs to be set for this to show up. It doesnt appear to do anything so far in my experiments.

I have switched on transparency and light through Trans.

Probably something I am missing. ;)

Thanks

Mike R

In fact, the translucency was added at the last minutes, after the documentation was build, that's why there is nothing about it.
To be short, Translucency works on surfaces, and Subsurface, on volumes.

No problem. Decided not to use it as it gave my characters shadow an xray look. wierd. (Might have been a mixture of using fake fresnel as well though.)

Cheers

What is the best way to use translucency? In trees, I tried to use value but it seemed to turn the leaves white. Using a lighter shade of green seems to work better but I'm not sure if this is the proper method for translucency. Any tips?
Thanks.

For trees use translucency, not SSS ;)

For trees, use a lighter green or lighter & more intense texture map than the one in the color channel. The direction of the light determines which way the translucency goes. The top of the leaf facing the light will look like the normal texture without translucency. The underside will have the light coming through the same color as the color or map that was applied in the translucency. The shadow from the leaf will have the properties of the translucency channel, i.e. if it is light green then the shadow will be light green. You may have to adjust the brightness of the translucency to get the right amount.

5.0.3 Translucency

It also seems that with the 5.0.3 update you need to have "Full Raytracing" turned on for translucency t work properly too. A scene of mine was just not looking the same as it was with 5.0.2 until I turned full raytracing on.
