Better preview images

I would like to see the back ground and back drop while animating. It would be great if Carrara could show reflections while animating and modeling. I do not expect the glass previews shaders to have refraction and reflection like it would if it were rendered. I would like to see the sky while animating and see the glass look more photo realistic.

I agree...better preview rendering would be great... I was almost swayed by Truespace 7's DirectX realtime rendering while modelling...very nice. It may be its only possible by DirectX, but it could be an option for those of us on WinDoze and with a decent graphics card that supports DirectX 9. Otherwise, perhaps better use of the OpenGL 2.0 standard could add similar power ?

I have just totally jumped both feet into Carrara (upgraded to Pro, got Hexagon and Poser 6), so now I would like to see the system grow to rival some of the other packages' features

You need to go to the interactive renderer settings. You can check "show backdrop" to see that in working mode. There is also a checkbox for "reflection" which will show that in working mode too. The background option is not available now. Transparency is available, but not the skies.

I would like, along these lines, to have some little thing indicate the position of the sun while I'm working the assembly room, so I can know exactly where it is without having to guess by reading off the sun position numbers in the sky or realistic sky editors.

Also, along the idea of 'previews', it would be nice to be able to save two render settings in the render room, with different quality and output size - one that could be use for quick very low quality preview renders, and then click the other without having to adjust any settings and I would get my quality render.

Or is this already in there?

patrick210,

I did enable reflection. It wants to start to show reflection on certain objects but not all. The big mirror does not want to reflect the images. I don't think reflections show up on 3-D cubes. I would like to see the sky when animating. It would help to see just where the clouds are compared to the top of my mountains and buildings.

andywright,

I was impressed with the True Space 7 preview also. That is why I made my post. I think Direct X might work better than Open GL for real time previews while animating and modeling. .

I have played with the interactive render settings but they are still limited. Lanscape textures look like a patchwork quilt of different greens, reflection is ok on some and not others, transparent glass just shows as a ghost (try the packaging scene with the glass bottle of green stuff), and the lighting is very hit and miss in terms of how well you can see its effect (e.g. sunlight mentioned earlier here).

It is definately coming on, but Truespace seems to have made the next step where you have fast interactive rendering that in some cases would do as the final output, but all the power is produced by the DirectX 9 graphics card so no CPU slowing. I realise that DirectX would mean that some features would be limited to the PC users and Eovia may be wary of that on a cross platform package. However it could be done by CPU for Macs, and anyway, people have to live with the limitations of their hardware to some extent, or upgrade to what works best.

andywright,

The new RT preview rendering of TS 7 was built from the ground up. It is brand new. I imagine Eovia will try to get something even better than TS 7. I agree the Carrara animation previews need to be better. I admit a year ago I was happy with the Carrara previews but TS 7 has uped my expectations. I agree the closer it can look like a fully rendered image the better. I would like to see the sky in my previews but that might be hard to do.
