Warning Bitmap Textures

Hi, When I look over the gallery, i see over and over again, that the same default shaders are used, this can contribute to a similar look overall to all the images.

I was wondering if anyone uses bitmap/textures as such, please express your feelings about this.

I do use selfmade textures most of the time and I think for some effects it is essential. But sometimes the default shaders also work good... especially the ones for skin and so on.
The reason, why many people do not use selfmade textures might be, that it is more difficult to unwrap a model by hand and to make a texture in a 2d-program. That is why I used the standard shaders and procedural textures, until I somehow learned how to do it.

I use photo textures of my own making or from other sources all the time. Sometimes I think making up good looking procedurals is a greater challenge and a bit of fun too.

I use both all the time, depends on what works better in a particular situation. If you look online and in magazines you can find a fair amount of free textures, and also take your own, which I do frequently. To date I have about 7,850 photo textures.

I think most gallery pictures use the default shaders because it's quicker. Unwrapping a model and painting textures by hand can take alot of time, but the results can be quite amazing.

If you don't know the UV Editor and/or the shader system well, then using the defaults will allow you to make an descent image without excerting alot of effort.

So for hobbiest and time-restrained professionals, this is a good option to get quick results.

If you mix and match your procedurals with plugins like Anything Goos, you can get more realistic results without having to repaint everything on a UV map.
