Trying for a car paint shader.

Seems not too bad so far.

You can download them and fiddle away.

I have included an updated image of how they look now. Although they look a bit better than these images seem to show.

Cheers

Yes, they are really good so far. I suggest to make the reflections a little more visible.
Best regards JuST

These are for Carrara 5 so if you want to fiddle around with them no problems.

Just post any advances on them here please.

Cheers

When I tried to grab them, I got a .php ending instead of a .rar? Not that I really know what to do with a .rar file anyway. I'm assuming that's some sort of zipped Mac deal? Any chance of getting them in .zip format or even unzipped?

I'm happy that I could help.
@Naomi: yes it is kind of a zip-format. Some people like it better than the zip format, also I don't know why?

If you have a PC you can download ZipGenius, it's free, and it can unzip practically anything - including rar.

Thanks. I had to rename the file after getting it, to get rid of the php extension and give it back the .rar extension. Then I was able to use zipgenius (thanks for the link) to unzip it.

Very nice looking shiny paint shaders!

It's beyond me why anyone would use the .rar format. Especially in a case like this. Anytime I've ever seen someone use it somewhere it's met with a response similar to Naomi's. i.e."What is it and what do I do with it?". Yes, .rar has been around as long if not longer than .zip and some would say it does a "better" job but let's face it they both get the job done. (and in this case zipping and stuffing yielded the exact same file size. I checked.) When posting on a message board and trying to appeal to the largest number of people it's always best to go with the common file type rather than the arcane. In this case .zip for Win .sit for Mac. Everyone knows what to do with those and you avoid all the "I had to rename the file after getting it, to get rid of the php extension and give it back the .rar extension" nonsense.

By the way, the car shaders look nice.

I use rar and have done for years. I dont need winzip or any other software. i dont install software unless I personally woud use it. . Winrar does me fine as it opens most formats.

For most things it makes a better job of compressing the stuff that I usually compress.

I would have thought that winzip etc would have been able to uncompress rars by now. Are they really stuck in me and only my format attitude? . Only joking.

Cheers anyway

All airlines use english and miles as the universal language. Winzip should be cosidered in the same way. I have never had problems and the socalled benefits of others is insignificant compareed to the nusance value they create.

This is a flippin joke isnt it?
I use winrar all the time as it opens ALL formats. I dont use winzip as it doesnt.

I saw a couple of folks asking about car paint shaders. I never saw replies to them so i thought I would give it a try and post them up. Or if they were answered it was to buy a pack of shaders. Not really what they were after. They just wanted some help. Instead I get people complaining about a format I personally use. Anyone want to complain because of the soap I choose to use? I mean it might offend someone as the smell doesnt sit right with them.

My personal choices are up to me and you can be rest assured I wont bother trying to help in future.

If someone doesnt know how to open a rar file or even recognise it, then as happened here others helped out. No problem whatsoever.

Not laughing out loud anymore. In fact pretty damned CENSORED off. There is NO problem.

Normally I have a sense of humour and I point that out in my posts but this is ridiculous.

Had PM asking if they can be used for commercial or non commercial work.

Use them as you see fit. They didnt cost me anything other than a wee while fiddling around.

Theya re all absically the same shader. I just wanted to show that it was easy to mix and match colurs. want a green shader with red soft highlights no problem.

Cheers

I'm so sorry it started a problem Mike. I didn't mean to complain, I just needed help to get your cool shaders.

On the upside, I now have zipgenius and it seems to work just great!

On the other upside (yeah, there are two upsides :+) I've got some super looking shaders for free!!

Thanks!!

I'm just glad someone posted a link to a free uncompressor for rar files... been looking for one. I'm also glad Mike was kind enough to share his shaders regardless of how he compressed them. Thanks Mike... you deserve a big pat on the back!

Oh, I know what you mean, I already played with doing that. No good success yet, but fun trying.

Well here is an explanation fo the shader. Hope it helps.

I have also included this gold metallic shader as well. As before what you are seeing in the image is not up to the detail in the actual shader.

The areas circled in pink are the main colours of the paint. The base shall we say.

The area in Red is the colour of the soft highlight and the colour of the sparkles. (Currently white sparkles) and the noise blender to mix them.

The Area in Blue is what gives us this soft glow area. Phong shader. Try anisitropic as well although this doesnt work too well on spheres it is pretty good.

The final light greean area is what blends the gloss finish and the base coat together. Fiddle with it.

Cheers

Sorry if I got your dander up! Know what some days can be like. I find ,rar files rare but often something seems odd in them which my X-Ace Plus finds a problem. Curious to know why yours downloaded as a .php? Like you shader. A recent thread here, or on another Carrara forum, pretty well covered car paint shaders so probably why the slow response here.

You know, I wondered about the php suffix myself. I think that has a lot more to do with the site itself and how it is put together. Also could have to do with the browser (IE6) or even the OS (XPpro SE2). Maybe somewhere somehow, it is trying to save me from myself and keep me from downloading a virus. LOL

Proud to say I've never had a virus, and knock wood - won't.
