| Moderator ![]() | I'd like to hear some benchmarks on how well rosetta runs. I'm planning on doing the "switch" myself.

| Vertex ![]() | I got my 20" Intel Mac a couple of days ago. I've installed and run Hexagon and Carrara on it. So far, it seems to run usably, but noticeably slower (as to be expected). It's nowhere near as slow as an emulator like VPC. I've only goofed around with it quickly and with low-poly stuff, so no real high end tests. In general I'd say it's quite usable, it just doesn't feel real zippy or glass smooth. |

| Vertex ![]() | Any more info on this from Eovia? My Intel iMac arrives Thursday, and I have been exploring the Carrera 5 demo as a step up from Bryce... I don't really want to make a purchase at this point without an indication of when a universal binary might be available Garry |

| Vertex ![]() | I emailed Eovia directly and they said they are not publicly announcing any sort of timeline for the Universal Binaries. In fact, they did not even acknowledge that they would ever provide UBs, but they also did not say they wouldn't. Based on that I'm assuming eventually they'll churn out UBs, but it may be a long while. Thomas, No stability problems using Hex/Carrara on the Intel Mac. I also just got Luxology's Modo. Hex runs better via Rosetta than Modo, but both are slowish. Carrara is the slowest, but I've always thought Carrara was sluggish. I can tolerate it because I'm mostly a hobbiest right now in 3D. If using Hex/Carrara were a big part of my job, I would NOT want to run it via Rosetta right now. I've run Hex/Carrara on my iBook and my Dual G5 2.7. I'd say the iBook feels smoother cuz OGL is native, but rendering and subdivisions might process faster on the Intel iMac. I haven't run any tests to be sure, but it feels that way. I'll try to run some official tests using the built in project files so you can verify on your end as well. |

| Vertex ![]() | Thanks for your responses... @Mindbend - how much RAM does your iMac dual core have? Tests on a number of sites (including HardMac/MacBidouille) on Rosetta performance indicate that Rosetta loves RAM... As a result I have ordered 2GB - but have no idea how much difference that is going to make with an app like Carrara..? @Thomas - interesting that you think that Eovia will wait for the PowerMac to be updated before jumping, given that (from Apple's last financialcall) they are running at 2:1 iMacs for PMacs... Ah well.... Decisions, decisions! ;-) Garry |
