animating accident damage

I'm looking for the most accurate way to show crushing damage to metal objects in an animated form. I'm becoming quite familiar with Carrara 4 Pro and have used Amapi to a much lesser degree, but I can't figure out how to get the correct result without a lot of post work or object replacement. Is there a plugin or tutorial somewhere that will give me what I want?

Their is no specific plugins I know bout that, but I think you can find a good way to do that with the Carrara modifiers (Impact, explosion, etc...) and a little bit of vertex animation.
It's a little bit a work "by hand", but I don't think you will find an "automatic" solution to do this kind of animation, even in other 3D packages.

You might also be able to fake it to some extent with physics and object replacement. Perhaps if you gave us an example?

You could try using a series of morph targets for each, sectional piece of the vehicle. For example, the bumper would be it's own object. You can make a morph target to bend in the middle and push it slighting into the body of the vechile. You can follow that up with another morph to twist the bumper (and you can use both morph targets at the same time).

You'll make another morph target for the structur under the bumper. This gets morphed nearly at the same time as the bumper for with a different "cruched" look that is appropriate. Repeat for the trunk, tires, or any other part that is crunched.

For the glass, I would have two versions. One version is intact and one piece, the second is a grouped collection of "pieces" of glass that is in the pattern of the first piece. On the timeline, when the window shatters; hide the intact one and make visible the second. Animate the second one's objects to fly in various directions by motion paths. If time is really a concern, then use an explode modifier. Explode modifier will not look as good, but in a time pinch, it may be useful.

If you are simulating the tire marks that get digged onto the crement, then use a decal animation to place it into the scene.

I appreciate all the suggestions I have recieved from here and the Renderosity forum. It looks as though morphing will yield the best results to my situation.
With some exploding glass and tire tracks, it will be a long process and if I'm able to satisfy myself with the result, I'll invite everyone to take a peek. (It looks great in my mind.)

Hello,
I know in C4d rev 9, you can put some target to object with clothilde, and make some easy deformation.

See it at maxon.de

Yeah something like that is what came to mind for me too, not specifically with Cinema, but I saw yesterday a presentation at the LA lightwave user group and it's pretty neat what you can do with cloth deformers that are weight mapped, for waving hair with gravity and wind and latency....

During a crash, a car folds like cloth, so perhaps you can simulate similar behaviour with Poser 5's cloth system or something in Carrara.

Is there a way to have deformers across a mesh which acts like weightmaps on vertices, kinda like bones have weights?

Another technique might be possible using Anything Grooves or the EDIT: (native Carrara 5 Displacement - My bad for not seeing your original post completely. Anything Grooves is your best option in C4).

Unless I miss my guess, you should be able to paint your "crush" area just the way you want it, and use displacement in a shader mixer to slowly crush the area you want, at whatever speed you desire.

That may or may not be easier that manually deforming the mesh.

I asked about a crash type plugin that the auto makers use. I know Ford, Chrysler and GM have software to do crash simualtions. If Lightwave can do crash simulations that is good news. Lightwave is not that expensive anymore.
