I think the water is great new Carrara addition. IMHO the water is not ultra-realistic but still very good for many purposes from the examples. Need more info and images to see what the capabilities are but I can think of many benficial ways to use this new Carrara feature in illustrations. Very happy this was implemented. |

I never said that I completely switched to Vue, I was "forced" to purchase it because I had a deadline on one of my projects and Carrara was simply not able to deliver at the moment, that's all. I got familiar with it's interface very fast so I find myself using it much more than Carrara lately. None of my statements, again, are biased, I always made fair comparison between two of them, pros and cons... Both of them are just a tools for me, there is no love or affection of any kind involved.... If my post hurt your feelings in any way or form (I hope you noticed I used word "maybe" in it, so I was not actually stating anything), I apologize, but, i will not kiss no behind and pretend that I'm seeing an ocean when I'm not, sorry, it just would not be, well, honest enough

I think even if you have the very best $500 ocean shader plugin, it takes a lot of skill and experience to make a really convincing ocean. Just like modelling or rendering. I suspect a good user with a lower spec shader can make as good or better than a novice user with top plugin. Anyhow C6 shader might be allright, it depends how many channels for foam and wave shape mapping and animation variables have been implemented and we havent seen whats under the hood yet.

I agree. I think the question should have been who made it instead of which program it was made from. The very reason why I posted those Blender($0.0) images is because there is a bit of subjectivity when interpreting oceans. I don't think there's such a thing as accurate representation of them. There are tons of variables to consider like time of the day, wind direction and strenght, color of the sky and surrounding area, ocean depth, and more... The ocean you saw yesterday is not the same ocean you're seeing today. Artists can only make it appear as close to reality as possible. We can't just say it looks real or it doesn't without being very specific. That would only mean we don't know any better. Last edited by Sketchy; 29th July 2007 at 11:04. |

I have always been somewhat puzzled by Ringo as his comments in ALL forums many times have sounded like sales pitches rather than infomational posts. So I was very interested to read this in an earlier part of this thread: "Just like Thomas said this is his "personal" forum. It does have a Carrara section and I am posting Carrara related news. I do not have lots of time to visit here often and when I do come over here I am not representing DAZ 3D. I am coming here as any other regular member. I only represent DAZ 3D in the DAZ 3D forums not outside and I like to keep it that way. It just so happens that I am posting Carrara related news that is all. So I am NOT a DAZ 3D official here at polyloop nor at any other forum other than the DAZ 3D forums." That clears things up a lot for me and from now on I will be better able to judge the quality of the information he posts. I don't think I will be so quick to take exception to his posts as I have often done in the past. Thank you, Ringo, for the clarification. I think everyone would do well to take special note of it. P.S. Wow! That Scanline stuff is awesome. They must have a supercomputer or two in their basement! Last edited by sailor-ed; 29th July 2007 at 16:11. Reason: additional info |

The ocean tool certainly doesn't qualify as a killer tool, but it might make Carrara more fun to use for some users. I agree that the examples don't show the most realistic ocean, but I don't think we have enough information to say that it can't create such. I remain hopeful and optimistic. We'll see in the coming days... |

Ringo, I thank you for the info about Carrara 6 as does everyone else on this thread but this is polyloop.com not daz3d.com. We welcome your info about Carrara 6 but if others want to post about better alternatives you must accept it and also expect some critisism. There are no Daz cheerleaders here. I think the Cararra 6 examples looks decent but I admit it could be better. I look forward to new info about Carrara 6's feature. Some features may get good feedback other features may not. | |

A whole lot . He is an engineering student and not into 3d visualization that much, and the point is this is less difficult than I thought in a high end package. There is an inbuilt create ocean button.(yes truely) but the rest of it is pretty difficult. For us lesser mortals C5 is pretty good most of the time, but you dont get all the bells and whistles like that. It is one of the reasons I am learning Maya though.

That "Whole lot" was my point too. You get what you pay for. So comparing Carrara with Maya seems a bit unfair since they are miles apart, in both features and price. The day you get the current version of Maya for $192 and upgrade to the next version for free, I´ll keep my mouth shut (I would probably be to busy drooling all over my credit card anyways). But seeing Autodesks price policy for some years now, I would more than likely die of old age before that happens. |
