Best way to get .max into Carrara?

As the prime part of my jobs is to do pc-game cover illustrations, I get models from within the games here and then to be used in layouts. Most of the time though they come as .max-files. I have to ask the developer or publisher to convert these into usable files (I'm on a mac, so I can't get Max).
Until now I asked them to convert to FBX, but that's coming along with some problems. Textures get lost (UV is kept), sometimes the models parts are all mixed up and have to be rearranged.
Do you've got a hint at which file type to use best to get .max-models into Carrara?
Thanks a lot, Loopers.
