Applying Texture w/Alpha Channel

What I am trying to do is apply a texture on top of another using the layer tool. What I wanted to do is make the added texture look like it had scratches on it, so in Photoshop, I applied an alpha channel for that purpose and saved it as a tiff. I applied it using the layer tool in the tecture room, the scratches looke good except for the fact that the alpha channel maked everything, including the object.

In other words, the black area on the alpha cut a hole through the object and all I wanted for it to do was to just mask out certain parts of the texture. What am I doing wrong? Another reason for the alpha is that I'm appying a rounded logo and would like to get rid of the background in the image.

Help Please.

Wow, it looks like I figured it out. Instead of using a single channel on the layer with an image with the alpha channel, I used multi-channels on the layer and in the opacity, I loaded up a greyscale from the original alpha channel of the first image. Boy, I was really banging my head on this one for a while.
