| UV mapping?
I can not get my displacement map image to show up in the UV mapping tool in the vertex modeler. I need to map the image to one side of a cube. Can any of you get the black and white displacement maps to show up in the UV editing tool? I do not not see the attachment icon to post a screen shot.

Not the one to answer really but I can not see the relationship between displacement maps and the UV editor? The PrintScreen icon should be on your key board. Do you know what then to do in your imaging (photoshop) app? |

| bwtr,Wow, you still amaze me. I know how to use the print screen funtion just fine. I think you have even seen a few of my screen shots so lets not waste time asking silly questions. I am stating I can not see the icon to upload my screen images/attachments like I used to see it. You would know that if you read my post better. I see the attach file under miscellaneous options but it will not let me do it. I was told UV mapping would work with displacements. It seems like it would be easy to position a black and white image used for displacement exactly where you want it with the UV editor but maybe not.

I know I am dumb but --"Icon" to upload screen images/attachments--and--attach file under "miscellaneous options"--don't relate to anything I can see in the VertexRoom? and the same goes, you will perceive, for why I interpreted you print screen comment. Perhaps we went to different schools of English. Sorry.

Thanks for that. I am pretty old but try to keep my wits about me. Again, maybe it's my age, but would I keep a memory of you actually, specifically, showing print screen examples? It still surprises me how many of those I know who have never even noticed the PrtScn tab! I am curious about the concept this thread of yours is about-- I can't visualise what you are trying to do. I really do hope you can get the chance to give us an image so that I will understand. |

I am still miles away from understanding what you are attempting but, in relation to anything thats in the Displacement tag it seems that area has a set of working rules all to itself in a lot of ways.

bwtr, Please read my post as is. It is not a riddle. Take any image and use it in the color channel and you will be able to see it in the UV editor. It is needed to do good UV mapping. I can not get any image to show up in the UV editor if it is in the displacement channel. I would like to think images used for displacement would be visible in the UV editor to allow a person to manipiulate the image to the object better. |

Ok. Your original message contained two unconnected items. (I took them as connected) I use just about everything in the displacement Tag (as different perhaps from using the bump in the main shader tree) but rarely actually use black and white bump maps there. Now you will follow from that that I see a connection in working between bump and displacement. If that "connection" holds true one would not expect any images in either bump or displacement would be expected to be available in the UV area unless there was, very specifically, a detailed special set of actions in Carrara to do so. Which I am pretty positive there is not. ( The only alternative I see is to, temporarily, put the image you want into the colour channel as a map. Now, if I now understand the problem, and if my suggestion is of value, the question for me is what end result is attained?( I can not see a logical connection between the sizing of a UV map with a bump map?) Sorry I have seemed thick. It's been an interesting experience! Brian |

Displacement maps do not show up in the UV room. Put it in the color chanel if you need to see it. All of your "adjusting" should have been done prior to creating a UV map. But do whatever adjustment you need to do and then move it to the displacement chanel |

The mind wont stop. If you want to allocate a "bump" map to a particular part of your object would you not normally do that in say Photoshop, using the the normal UV map as your underlayer guide for producing a new "bump" map? Making a bump map that suits the UV map? I don't know if this is an answer,or if it works--just "thinks"! |

What I have said-and if I am on the same wave length anyway--is the same as you do in painting a bumpmap for say lumps on a face of Viccy say. The principle seems to work ok in the displacement tag. Hope I am on the same mental track! |

That is what I want to do. I only want the black and white displacement image on one side of the cube. It wraps around my whole cube as is. I would like to think the with the UV mapping I could make adjustments.
