Carrara 6...64-bit?

Hiya.

I'm "in the market" for a new/upgraded all-around package. Just so you know, I use Softimage|XSI (v4 Advanced; no maintenance...let it run out ages ago). I don't need to upgrade to v6 of Adv., so I was/am gonna 'down/side' grade to Essentials. It looks like I'll be spending about $2k US on that. Ok...I can live with that (barely!).

However, I've been 'shopping around' for something different, just to mix it up a bit in my brain. I want to get my creative juices flowing more actively, and figure a 3D package change might help give me different ideas for projects and whatnot. At any rate, Carrara entered my thoughts because of it's "all-aroundedness" (nice rendering, terrain and vegitation, etc.). However, I would feel better about purchasing it if I knew my dual-Opteron 64-bit machine here could make use of it's 64-bit's. I'm not a fan of DAZ at *all*, and that makes me rather weary... But, if Carrara 6 seems to deliver good 64-bit support, I might be willing to give it a go.

Any thoughts? (my absolute maximum budget for purchasing is about $2k USD).

Hi.

I don't know what DAZ will do with Carrara but I've had a look at the new features of RealSoft 3d (version 6 which should be released this year) and it looks complete and promising (http://members.ams.chello.nl/rbroeder for V6 news). It seems it will have vegetation, 64 bit support, a very powerful material editor and very good modeling tools. If you have the time you can give it a look.

I think you can of course wait for Carrara 6 and Hexagon 3 to be released... I was just replying to Plum's post and Realsoft seems a very good software.
However, as a Carrara+Hex user I would like to see newer and better versions of both programs soon too. It just seems to me that it will be a long wait...

Hiya.

Took a look into Realsoft3D. A rather nice update (I've been keeping my eye on it since it was still "Real3D" from...1995 or so?). I'm gonna have to try the demo or something...see how it's animation is. Thanks for the link!

Plum, Daz has Carrara pro for $197.98 with platinum membership. It's definately worth that!

I would like to think that this would hint a new release coming out???
But probably not

Hiya.

Yeah, I saw their new deal...I 're-inlisted' my Platinum membership...just in case I decide to pick up Carrara. I'm playing with the demo right now...

The biggest thing I'm worried about is picking it up, learning it, getting the hang of it, and then DAZ throwing out v6 and charging an arm and a leg to upgrade. I'm still skittish around DAZ with regards to the whole "trust us, we'll fix everything..." ;)

I'm gonna check out Lightwave v9 as well (LW 9 can be had in 64-bit flavour). *MAYBE* Cinema 4D...but Maxon seems to be doing a lot of price increasing. Seems like very upgrade sports new stuff...and a couple hundred dollar increase in upgrade price as well. XSI Essentials is still winning out...even for $2k...

I guess it depends on what you need it to do for you. I only do stills so OLD software works fine for me. With C5, i have most everything to last me quite a while. HDRI, Volumetrics, Replicator, Sub Surface Scattering etc. Plus i get a real kick out of using Carrara. You don't have to do as much planning to create a scene. just start plopping in some stuff, light it, and start playing.
Daz could take a few years to come out with C6, and i don't think it would effect me much. You may have very different needs though.
