| Poser5 to Carrara5 import errors
Greetings Polyloop, Thanks for having me...... Problem 1: I have not been completely successful in importing into Carrara 5, a simple Poser 5 'Don' figure .pz3 file, complete with conforming clothing using the Native Import function. What I got was just the bone structure wearing the props and no figure at all. Problem 2: I can import a Poser 5 'Don' figure complete with conforming clothing as an .obj file into Carrara 5, but the figure reverts back to Poser 5's default pose and there does not seem to be any bones associated with the figure. So I'm unable to pose the figure. Setup: I'm using two platforms here. Carrara 5 is running on an AMD class PC system and Poser 5 is running on a Power Mac G5 system across a network. I suspected that I had a problem when trying to load a .pz3 file into Carrara 5 using the Native Import and the dialog panel asked for a location of the runtime folder. What runtime Folder? And then came all these complaints about, can't locate certain .obj files and .jpg's which I figured had to do with textures. Just creating a runtime folder on the PC and pointing to it did not help either. There is nothing in the folder. I thought the Native importer would work just fine since Poser does not have to be installed on the same system as Carrara 5. Question: Is the fact that I don't have a valid runtime folder on the PC associated with problem 1 above? And what's up with my problem 2. -btw- When importing Poser files whether .pz3 or .obj should the universe and ground parameters be imported as well? Any help in resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated from what seems to be a forum of very smart people. Thanks to all in advance. raytrace |

dead easy, raytrace. The runtime folder is located inside the Poser app folder, so when Carrara or Poser ask for its location, you need to navigate back to the app folder for Poser (the correct version if you are on a network) and find the files it's looking for, so if it starts asking for xyz textures etc, you have to locate the correct folder (eg runtime>hair>miki>kozaburo hair textures)within the Poser runtime folder and then off you go. I'm guessing, but I imagine that if you don't have Poser linked to Carrara through transposer, then a .pz3 figure will default because it won't have read the pose you made in Poser. Simple as that. Poser won't export bones through an obj file, you have to recreate in Carrara, but you can have Carrara linked to the original Poser through transposer in P6/7. Finally, universe and ground parameters don't really make any difference, to me at least. I work in scales (as in a figure at 180mm Carrara-world is 1/10th scale of a 6 foot man real world, so those parameters become irrelevant. Beyond that I have no idea what I am talking about! |

| Poser5 to Carrara5 import errors
Hello Jones2000u, Thanks for your expeditious reply, It does make sense to point to the runtime folder. I'll just wasn't sure I could share a Mac brand Poser's runtime folder on the Mac side with Carrara on the PC side. But since Carrara is only trying to locate .obj & .jpg files maybe it will work. Transferring bones through an object file was my ultimate objective, but I figured out that if I deselect 'world transformations' during an object import in to Carrarra, I can maintain the pose I initially created in Poser, rather than having to settle for the default Poser 5 Don figure with out stretch arms. Thanks to Thomas's excellent tutorial on [C5] Rigging & Skinning: Bones setup elsewhere on this site, it was no longer a nightmare in trying to figure out how to maintain my 'Poser' poses or how to recreate themin Carrara. It would be nice though to save time by being able to import bones from Poser. Would it be reasonable to think that a .pz3 file linked to Carrara through transposer will retain the bone structure? Also, I read in the forums that transposer was offered as a free download, but on DAZ's site, it sells for $129.00. Is it worth the money just to be able to import dynamic hair? Finally, I agree with you that universe and ground parameters are Irrelevant to us guys who design to scale. Thanks very much Jones for your very helpful information. |

I'm new at Carrara, but it appears you're going to have problems if Poser is not on the same computer as Carrara. That's because all the references really change... the paths to the files. It's similar to the problems you'd have if you try to share a Poser project between two different computers... |
