blue vertex edges

This is for my interest/education: if you import a complicated object into the vertex modeller, various areas are bounded/divided by blue edges. I did a search through the manual on "blue" in acrobat, but only found info on light and shaders etc, and not about vertex edges. I just wondered if someone could tell me whether they have any special properties, or whether they are divisible, or whether they are just artefacts of the original shapes? For example, they appear if I import a boolean .obj file, along the welds lines. Can they be easily broken apart?

Creased edges, they are yellow when highlighted.
