Lighting makes things visible.

Details in the manual.

Yes, the Manual (Help file) really is very good in Carrara. Work through that--experiment-- and come back with specific problems which arise.

The best thing to start with Carrara is to open the wizard and to load the 3 or 4 scenes about ligthing (one piece, two pieces, three pieces of lights etc..)
Then to switch on/off the lights, and to see how they are made in the properties panel.

You don't need to play with Global illumination or transparencies at first.

Yes, Piem is quite right and then also maybe start by using bulbs first until you get used to those and see how the range (5-400 inches or so) actually behaves in Carrara. There's no way just by looking to see what effect they'll have until you do a few prerenders and bulbs are easiest to control at first. Then after you get used to those try using spots and angular falloff and all that sort of thing. Tip on spots is to use the "point at" modifier until you are more comfortable lining them up precisely.
