| Smoothing
I am working my way on Carrara after many years of being out of the 3-d world from ancient AutoCad 10!!!. Anyway I am trying to find a way in Carrara (specially vertex modeler) to just smooth part of the object. Is there a way to segregate the object so that when the smooth is applied only the area I want to is?

That idea proved to provide problems because the smoothing distorted the polygons. In the attached screen shot I selected 4 polygons, gave that selection a new shading domain ( which allows you to select by shading domain) and then used Model>Subdivide (twice in my example) Would this surfice? |

Additionally, instead of subdividing, you can simply select the polygons that you want smoothing applied to and in the Vertex modeler choose the pull-down menu Model -> Smooth Edges. Carrara lets you smooth or crease edges on an instance by instance basis.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I tried them yet was not able to achieve my goal as expected. The effect I am trying to achieve is for example a rectangular plastic bar which is being melted at the end. Thus I need to create the melted effect.

Now that I know what you're attempting, using smoothing with several extra vertexs may be the best way to go. This image was made with a simple cube that I scaled and then added some points on the vertex edges. I creased edges that I didn't want to be affected by the smoothing operation and smoothed the others. The final step was to add the dynamic subdivision.

Thanks that way certainly does the effect. I did noticed on your tutorial of the model room and also on the tutorial by Jack Whitney that the universal manipulator can be selected in the vertex modeler while using the directors camera. Yet If I am in the vertex modeler using the director's camera I am not able to manipulate the universal manipulator in any way. I can do it in all other camera views but not the director's. Any idea why?

Trunks seems like you missed the part where I mentioned that the universal manipulator works on other camera views but not in the director's. If I split the screen into four views the universal manipulator cannot be used in all four depending on the face, edge or vertex I have selected.

Occasionaly, there will be some issues between interactive renderers and how the tools work on-screen. By selecting the icon shown in the screen capture, you'll be presented with a pop-up dialog where you can switch renderers (the choice is at the top of the dialog) Switch them out and see if that helps. If not, we'll do a little more trouble shooting. Trunks does bring up a point though, I can't tell from your posts whether or not you are actually using the 5.1 versions of Carrara. That will make a difference. ;) Mark |

Mark, I changed interactive rendere as per your instruction but no effect on the universal manipulator. I certainly skip that yes I am using 5.1. The odd thing is in the vertex modeler I can be with only one window in directors view and I cannot select the manipulator. Yet if I split the window to four views I can select the manipulator in the director view without a problem. Does Carrara limits when the manipulator can be used? |

The Univeral Manipulater should be veiwable/usable in all windows. So, something else is going on that we haven't found yet. In the vertex room, you might try going to the Manipulator pane in the the properties tray and then checking and un-checking the "Hidden" checkbox. Beyond that, an e-mail to DAZ is probably the best option. I can't think of any other settings to play around with. :-P Apologies for being so unhelpful... |
