Carrara & Vista & Dual Core?

I have been a Ray Dream / Carrara user since it was owened by Fractial Design. What's that 20 years? Anyway its time for a new computer, and I was wondering how Carrara will work with Vista, and is it dual-core aware? Etc. I don't follow the latest computer tech advances untill I need a new computer. It seems a lot changed in the last few years.

From what I've been reading by PC users on the dual core machines, Carrara works like a charm.

I still have some RayDream manuals around...for doorstops. ;)

On my E6600 Dual core , i can render pictures with two cores when activating multithread. That's really nice.

We'll have to wait.....

Maybe you are VIsta ready, but it would probarly take some time before Carrara is Vista ready.
At the moment Carrara uses the Opengl API as base for rendering and for the 3d environment. Opengl was chosen as a base for cararra because It supports multiple platforms (Including MAC and the PC), But Microsoft plans to support opengl in Vista only under an API layer. (which basicly means, that Microsoft Makes Opengl slow on purpose). This will result in slow rendering in Carrara when windows Vista is used as operating system.

So the current owner of Carrara allmost has to completely reprogram the core of Carrara to get desirable results on windows Vista. So don't count on it that Carrara 5 will be vista ready. It's to much work to give this huge patch for free. They will probarly sell it, and/or use it in carrara 6.

Yes, you will get multi-threaded rendering, but with quad core, don't expect 4x faster, expect maybe about 3.5x...
Dual core, you can't expect an exact 2x faster render either, but rather somewhere around 1.8x or so, but yeah, you will get two threads, kind of like network rendering...
