That's a wrong assumption. Corel aquired Bryce from MetaCreations around April 2000. About a year later, they came up with a major upgrade, Bryce 5, with tons of features. DAZ aquired Bryce around June 2004. They came up with version 5.5 almost two years later.
Corel just didn't want anything to do with 3d, probably realizing the market to be so saturated. They have proven to be right where Adobe and Microsoft are the only leading competitors of their products. And they are winning. They have one that has no competition at all, and that is Corel Painter.
