I have seen tonytrout and andreseloy both do the tutorial and post their results. I personally think that this is a completely different skillset that needs to be developed if a person has not 3d painted and displaced before(I know I'm not as good as others in this area). I know the work being done now is much better than when the betatesters started, you can see that in the Hexablog. Also the betatesters have had more time with the program, it makes sense that they can achieve a better output at first.

As for your quote, why would you texture map a sphere if it was just the same blue color over the whole thing? Just use the color channel and make it blue, don't go through the extra steps and paint it blue.
