The only way i can get it to do what I want is to use the stretch modifier.
Just tested that and what a long winded way.
. Go to frame...Close the group and move the entire group...Open group move to modifiers tab then squish or stretch... Close the group move to new frame move the group... opent the group etc etc etc.
If I could scale the group on one axis that would cut out many steps. There is no obvious reason why I cant.
AAAARRRGGGHHH.
. I really want to do this sketch in Carrara but silly little things just do my head in. ;)
