I learned a BUNCH. This was really my first attempt at modeling anything in HEX. I am now able to model most anything I want, in a way that I have not been able to do in the past.

Before Hex, I modeled only in Carrara and only with the spline modeler. I could work out some nice models, but I had no controll when texturing.

Now I need to work on better geometry, but I'm having a ball with HEX! and every day I find that if I think before I model, and take the right approach, I can model for hours without any glitches or so called "bugs". Hex has really turned out to be quite stable, even on my MAC

thanks for all of your suggestions throughout this tread

Well, we come from the same school then. Been using the VM and spline since C2 and haven't really looked back. I still find the VM very useful for cleaning up little bits or remnants from Hex and taking care of edges and stuff. The VM has a lot of really great things to be said about it too and the spline modeler is old, but misunderstood as well I think. For combined compound curves it is sweet! I did this dorky little image last year and could never achieve the screen on the left in the VM or Hex, it was the little spline modeler that could in this case.

Keep them comin!

I have the first version of Ray Dream Designer...before RD"studio" I still have the box and floppy disks
it was the only 3D application available that would run on a computer without a FPU(Floating Point Unit processor) I had a low end Mac Performa 630 without the FPU. Strata, and InfinD were about the only other "packages"

So my first experience with 3D was the spline modeler. It's vastly misunderstod, and underrated, and I only wish Carrara would do a better job of creating a vertex object from a spline... those triangles drive me a little nuts sometimes.

You're right... the VM for quick shading domains and creasing/smoothing edges... it perfect

Well, I had a big print made and it looks pretty good, but there is not enough "stuff" going on in the village.

I was going to add stuff in Photoshop, but the hi rez render was not quite hi rez enough for me to add the detail I wanted

Since I was going to re-render anyway...I made the houses bigger. I also ran a color gradient over it to draw the eye to the village

here is a close-up of the front to "pads" I have already added some "stuff".

That looks alot better, very nice detail on the texturing and stuff.. I dont think myself that adding mini animals makes it look busier, cause you can't see them now anyway either, but maybe just 5-6 more houses will give it that busier effect. A fleeting thought of a little boy or girl maybe pointing toward the village from the bridge went through my mind, but maybe that's too obvious or trite. Not sure..

Super cool follow up on this one, seems like you could just keep perfecting this stuff for a long, long time. I usually move on after the first dozen prerenders.

That's funny about the kid pointing. I like it. Maybe it's a child and his/her father walking. the kid is looking and pointing, but the dad is looking off somewhere else, and is too busy trying to give some "fatherly advise" to notice the village... or the child

I had thought about having a couple standing on the bridge kissing.
then i could have a bunch of "little people" sitting on one of the pads watching them. Kind of like watching a drive in movie.

I've never really tried to do much with people, but I could probably composite something in. Maybe I should stop this project, and start on some characters.
