Hello Folks. After receiving the great comments/feedback I'll definitly incorporate the suggestions into another revision and render. The update will have to wait until Monday. My weekend plans will prevent me from being at the computer. I'm worried that withdrawal might set in

Sketchy - Totally agree with you regarding composition and I admit that the reflections are a tad too bright. One of my computer cases is an Antec Sonata piano black and the reflections from the room are a lot dimmer.

Just - yep, the blossom shoul dhave a better shape to it. Agreed.

Grendel - Yeah, the rose looks like it sat too long without water. I'll freshen it up a bit.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! This is better than having the studio critiques back in Design school. I'm diggin' it.

Ok. It's time to put this Sonata away before I start whistling a Dirge. Thanks to everyone for the great feedback and encourgement.

Here's the updated pic with slight change in composition, camera angle and refined rose.

So, on to something new...

ok you guys are gonna kill me
shannon,
I dig the first render more. I realize technically it has its "reality" flaws like the rounded keys and the dull sharps and flats. However if the rose in that scene was shrunk about 40% is my guess it would be perfect.

I love the lighting in it with the shadows as I think it captures a more smooth ambience. The latest is a bit too harsh and thus loses it's magical dreaminess that the original had.

In my opinion the flat keys should be dulled a bit to make the piano body stand out. Otherwise it all looks a bit too much. In the orig they were perfect.

I only struggle with the rose as no ones gonna care about the rounded tops.
In the media business (disney, ILM, dreamworks) alot of incorrect things are done to make things stand out. I agree with this in your case.

I would probably only flatten the keys and reduce the rose size as the lighting to me is more realistic in the orig like a photograph w/o a flash.
The latest looks like flash photography to me.

Shanon,
I want terribly to learn to model. I just purchase hex 2. Where did you learn hex 2? I've done a couple tutorials but making a link on a chain is much different than building a piano or rose.
Can you point me in a direction to learn as you did?

A few months ago I started off with the same chain tutorial. You're here on Polyloop, so that's a great start. Use the manual that comes with Hex to learn the tools. Once you know what the tools are capable of you can take just about any tutorial on the web written for another application and use it as a guide for your process in Hex.

For example, the modeling for my rose was inspired by a tutorial for Blender. You can find it here. The tools are different from application to application, but the basic methodology is the same. And I have never used Blender (although I hear it's a great app).

Keep surfing the forums and keep up with the practice. As Nichod told me a few months ago, "Hex will get you there in no time."
