Plug & Cord

Hexagon for modeling and Carrara's presets for rendering. (Absolutely no photoshopping.) Just one of my practice exercises trying to hone my modeling skills using Hex.

OMG!! Like I said, I used Carrara's presets, including lighting, render defaults... Except the camera positioning. Carrara's scene wizard, anyone? Just wanted to check how my model will look like. I'm not sure what those tiny specks are.

Thanks, guys.

AlainK! Please accept my respect !!!
I am very new in the Carrara, and as I can see: using Hex is much better then modelling within Carrara itself?
Could you please confirm is it correct? I have Carrara 5 pro at this moment.
Especially I am trying to create a sliding door with a proper details in the Carrara... and I am still on starting point...

I have expressed my opinion on Carrara's modeling features in the other thread, and based on what I've read so far, I'm not alone. Some use Amapi.

http://www.eovia3d.net/showthread.ph...6&page=1&pp=15

Some who started with Raydream and early versions, ie, C1, C2, etc., are pretty good at Carrara's Spline and VM. It's really up to everyone's preferences. I'm still no expert, I've barely scratched the surface especially Carrara's shaders, which I'd like to tacke next if I have time. I will most likely rely on the generosity of nice people here.

Thanks all for the nice comments, btw.

Carrara 5 Pro's modeling tools are capable but not complete. There are tools that make certain jobs faster and easier in Hexagon. It's simple to state that Hexagon's sole purpose is to create models. Carrara's is to create models, render, texture, particule systems, and has a ton of specific features like realistic sky, plant (tree) modeler, etc.

Because of the nature of the programs are different, the focus and streamlined use of creating models are simply faster in Hexagon than in Carrara's VM. Carrara Spline modeler has some features that are quicker than in Hexagon, but you lack a great deal of vertex-level control by using this aspect of Carrara. (Usually the lack of control isn't an issue unless you are animating).

Very nice modelling, I like the way you have modelled the mesh bit where the cord joins the plug, also I think the metal rendering on the plugs looks very realistic. Image seems too dark, I notice this with some other images posted on the forum, is it due to different gamma settings with the monitors?
If I might make one observation, it is the shape of the cord. Where I live the cords wont bend in a curve edge on edge as you have shown, they tend to bend where it is flat. But maybe you have better cords there

Alan; Any chance you could post some wire views and/or a simple tutorial of how you developed the model?
Cheers,
Hal D

Sure. First, there are six objects in the assembly: the two heads (socket and plug), the tail or stopper (the one between the cord and head), the cord, and the prongs (flat and cylindrical). The rows of etched lines you see on the plug were taken from Thomas' tutorial "Modeling a mineral water bottle."

http://www.eovia3d.net/showthread.php?t=4742

The hole on the flat prong was taken from Yoshihisa's "Yet another usage of the Bridge tool."

http://www.eovia3d.net/showthread.php?t=4680

Just make sure you add the necessary edges to support the hole. I don't use boolean holes. I find the result hard to bevel/fillet. I'm still exploring other ways to make holes faster. (This should be requested in Hexagon 2, if you ask me.)

The rest are pretty basic except probably the stopper. That's the part that took me time to figure. At first, the solution is not always obvious, then it just hit you like a bolt of lightning after so many trials and errors.

About the cord: Good thing about Hex is that the PROFILE doesn't have lie perpendicular to the PATH. Just draw the shape of the profile on any view, then the path separately using the line tools, then use the SWEEP LINE on the Surface tab to create the cord. Make sure you are in the DG mode if you want to edit the result later.

(I'm still trying to learn how to make tutorials like those animated ones.) Btw, my wires are in shambles. I can't show them. It's too embarrasing. I'm too lazy. I just basically add the necessary edges especially on creases and corners. It's just a still picture, no intention to animate it.
These pictures are self-explanatory. Enjoy.

behzad & tonytrout,
You're right. I visited a friend and this same images on his monitor are too dark. I've tweaked the lighting a little bit. They're too light on my monitor now. I'm not sure on the others'. Thanks for the critique.
