Not quite sure what you mean by default textures. I used one of the default lighting models if that's what you mean. The colours come from the different shading domains I set up ready for texturing in C5pro.

All the textures in the final renders are done in C5 and are procedural. Hope this answers your question.

Update- 12/06/06

Here's another update. Not completely happy with this yet but I think I'm nearly there

I've textured the youngsters and added bones for posing. Here's a pic of the scene so far. The trees are C5 ones with a simple custom leaf created in Hex 2. I think a bit more vegetation would work well, perhaps some sort of floating stuff - not sure yet

Comments welcome.

"Oh Look Mum ! Who's going to have a nice meal today? That's us!"

Each time is going better.
The sea it depends your wish, looks a bit "oily" and not very much like water.
Of course we're not on earth

Thanks for the comment. Yes, the water does look a bit 'oily', but as you say it's not on earth

I played around quite a bit with different levels of transparency and reflection, etc but each time it just went too far away from the look of the original. So I ended up with it like this.

Strange really, the original sea-monster model that stated this thread wasn't intended to be alien at all, it just worked out that way

I guess you're right. Sorry i've never been so far.
But the pictures i've seen yesterday in National Geographic about this sea monster make me think that you did a very accurate work.

Shiny Finished it!

Thanks everyone for all the replies to this thread. Sorry it has been so long since the last update. I know this has been a long WIP - but not my longest. A gouache painting I did many years ago was spread over 2 years!

Anyway, I wanted to put some floating vegetation in this and after taking time out for Ringo's landscape contest, work, and decorating, I think I'm finally there with this pic

I started modelling a simple floating leaf and a 'flower floater' in Hex 2.1 a while ago. Finished them off yesterday and created a couple of variations of the 'floater'. Here's a wireframe of the master (symetrical) 'floater':

After much re-rendering and playing with the distribution on a surface replicator over this weekend, I finally finished up with this.

Well, I think this is it now. If I add any more to it I think it will get too busy. So here's a few details about the picture which started out as a modelling excercise of a dragon type head and just grew and grew!

No postwork on this one. All textures C5 procedural except for the planet in the background for which I did a hand painted texture in Photoshop and applied it to a sphere.

Software used:
  • Carrara 5 pro
  • Hexagon (1.2 and 2.1)
  • DCG EnhanceC and Anything Goos
  • Inagoni Veloute 2
  • Photoshop - for the planet texture
Comments are welcome and encouraged (if anyone can be bothered after all this time )

Oh and I've decided to call it 'Look Ma, dinner!'. Thanks to etienne for putting this idea into my head

I love seeing this kind of a thread, where you see the progression of how things started to the end and final product.

I love the sea monster great job. Lochness would be jelous.

A really well done scene. I think this is a lovely 'illustration' and could easily grace the cover of a publication.

Thanks for the praise everyone. I really learned a lot doing this one, as for another picture featuring this family - well you never know. But, I think I've seen enough of them, for the time being anyway
