Corgi

This is a WIP of my little dog, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The photo attached is a pic of her mother (who looks very similar but her legs are a little bit shorter than my dog's).

Completely modelled in Carrara 5Pro vertex modeller - my first real attempt at vertex modelling besides some simple plants in some of my earlier scenes. The aim at the moment is create as life-like a model as I can. It will be rigged with bones for animation and I will try to use Anything Grows to put some fur on her so I'm trying to imagine what she looks like under the fur.

This is the result of about 10 hours work so far but I'm starting to get a handle on vertex modelling I think. Unfortunately I haven't started on the mouth and teeth yet...

Very good model of your little dog. You are very good in the vertex modeler.

Pretty impressed for your having done it in Carrara. You will be over the moon when Hexagon is added to your modelling apps.

Update

Got to do some work on the nose and mouth last night. Also duplicated with symmetry and welded the two halves of the model together which smo0thed out the visible centre seam in the earlier pics.

Started UV unwrapping

Spent a LOT of hours unrapping the UV co-ordinates of the model. Still have not completed the task but have done enough to throw together a quick and dirty texture map for the the dog. As you can see the feet still need tidying up and the ears haven't been started on yet.

But I have also done the eyes. I'm quite pleased them...

BWTR - Although Hexagon probably is a better and easier modeller I can't quite justify the extra cost when Carrara 5 Pro's modeller can let me create nearly anything I want.

Everyone - thankyou for the kind comments.

Howie, download the trial version of Hexagon. You will almost certainly find you had money in your wallet you had forgotten about!

Here's an initial fur test. And as far as it goes it looks good so far. However I need to spend a bit of time drawing up some fur strand direction and length maps.

Still she looks nice and fluffy...

Toon

I'm currently slogging through rigging the corgi model at the moment but for your viewing pleasure here is a toon render of the final model using a quick map derived from the tedious task of unwrapping the UV co-ordinates.

Like your toon dog! your fur one is very cute but too fluffy

I have been doing some UV mapping like you I think, for days and days unwrapping feet and such (sigh). I find it easier to break the animal up into shading domains such as legs and soles of feet, and then map those domains. ie soles of feet planer map and legs cylindrical map etc. It is then easier to map, rather than trying to untangle big mess of points. Only disadvantage is that you have to match up the paint where the maps meet when you are painting. I believe you can rejoin vertices on the UV maps (or split) (in UVmapper but not sure in C5). I have not learned to do so yet anyhow, maybe expert out there can tell me

Yes you can split and join points in the UV editor. You just have to check the appropriate options in the display tab of the UV editor to give you the control points.

See the attachment.

How did you modeled the body of the dog? I mean to have the body without fur. I hope you did not shave your pet.

I basically just guessed what she looks like underneath her fur. I also have a friend with a very short-haired dog so I tried to image what that dog looked like with short legs and no tail.
