| Having made a bunch of modifications (some cosmetic, expression, etc.) I have acquired a good 3d print of this latest version. (I haven't had time to photograph the print, but here's a render + wireframe - yes, that has 214,000 + polys!) I'm not animating, and hi poly seems to produce a tighter 3d print. Next step is sending the print to have mold made and casting into coldcast bronze resins. Visit http://www.lumicast.com about the resin casting The 3d print was done by this outfit http://www.alchemymodels.com |

Thomas, now it far cheapper to do this kind of model with stereolithography. (les prix ont bien baissé, et on est précis au 100 è de mm maintenant de façon très abordable)

| Flip Flop was a test render only... Quote:
What you saw was a file done in Hex, then opened in Carrara (exported from Hex as .obj file). I just did that to render my model to see how it looked. I don't use Carrara (4 pro) to do anything (in this process) except use it for renders (unfortunate). My process is to model in Hexagon, export as .stl from Hexagon, open it in a utility called AccuTrans 3D (converts from one 3D file format to another) and export out of that again as an .stl or vrml file. Accutrans will also point out and correct flopped normals, something that Hex is supposed to do, but doesn't. I also merge all objects to one object in AccuTrans 3D and export out of there as a clean .stl file to send to the 3D print service. Neither Hexagon or Carrara seems to export a usable (by the 3D print service) .stl or .vrml file. I opened that final .stl file in Carrara to do the render you see in this thread... but even that has some artifacts (banding). The issue seems to be exchanging Hex files to Carrara. .3ds and amapi file types seem to be more accurate than some of the others. I hope that Eovia can make their children (software products) get along with each other better. A long-winded answer, I know... there may be other ways to do it, but this is what I figured out.

| Affordable good quality 3D print process Quote:
StereoLithography quotes I got were at the lowest nearly twice as much... actually polyJet is better and even more expensive... SLA uses supports, etc. during the process. These have to be polished and ground off, and in my opinion destroys a lot of the surface texture and details. The detail is good in my Zcorp print - it is a plaster base with a binder and is pretty tough, and they can produce the print in color if you need that. The older Zcorp printers do not do as good a job, but the Z510 is new and does a good job at a better price. Visit http://www.zcorp.com, contact them and they can tell you if they have any providers using their equipment in your area.

Thanks, Nate for all these infos. I don't know this ZCorp, but it seems veruy efficient. I usually use Amapi for STL, but Hexagon does the same thing. You have to verify the normals before exporting : just disable the double-side display in the bottom of the screen, and flip the bad polys. When you have time, post a photo of your model ! It will be a pleasure to see the real model

These are close and heavily side lit. The texture goes with the character, and is not at all objectionable. I think it will not be too obvious in the next step... casting into resin with a bronze look. He's only 5.5 inches high.
