| Aluminum can
Working on an aluminum can for another project, modelled in Hex. Let the edges get sloppy on the hole in the top and will need to fix but does'nt affect the smoothing. Also a quick render with a texture slapped on it in C4pro.

Yours is more accurate than the one I did for this illustration. Modeled in Rhino, texture/render in C4pro. I suppose that mapping texture on a Hexagon model is only practical in C4 or another program.... trying to do it in Hex is frustrating. | |

Rhino is awesome. Strictly nurbs... clean program. Not something to use for organics. I stopped at version 2 as it got sorta spendy past that. Someday I may go for the current version... but 2 does most of what I need.

Here is a couple of cans in a bucket of Ice. Placed a bulb light in the bucket to help the ice get a little more sparkle compared to the ambient light. Also these two were blowing off some steam after a busy opening weekend at the botanical gardens enjoying a few cold ones.

The modeling is not frustrating. Modeling in Heagon is a dream.... Texture mapping is the frustrating part... see thread in Hexagon/bugs to see what I am referring to... http://www.eovia3d.net/showthread.php?t=4270 Eovia tech support requested that I send them the files I used for these images... the last I heard from them was this email message on September 9th = Quote:

Nate : oh, for the UVs, yes, I understand (I missread ![]() Hexagon 2 will have a stronger system for the UVs, and I hope a lot better than the Carrara ones too ![]() For the tech support, I think it's the european one. send again a short email about your problem, I know they were pretty busy these last two months... |

Grendel; I was inspired by your original alum. cans - but I do not have the skill yet to do them in multi pieces - so I tried a swept curve to make one. The thumbnail is the result. Now to figure out the hole and tab + rivet - and someday texture. I think I also need to dome the top a little. Thanks for all the help, Hal Davey |

looks good Hal , I've attached a screencap of the can with and without smoothing. I used a grid with thickness for the tab, deleted a few polygons and extruded the rivet. For the hole tesselate your edges right into the can top. The top started as a line extracted from the cylinder and then fast extruded several times with scaling to get the shape.
