Also,
Does anyone know of a good technique for a split level water image in Carrara.

something like this

To actually get the curvature of the water against the glass?
I don't think I've ever seen that in 3D images, the reason the split looks like that is because the water curves up against the glass.
Usually in 3D I think I've only seen clean splits, and none that mimic the physical attributes of water (the bipolarity and the effect it has on the surface, not sure what you call that tension in English, in Norwegian it's just surface tension).
If you are just doing a single picture, you could model the water like that, though I've never tried it, so I have no idea if it works.

yes the curvature at the surface. I think it would be considered a meniscus?

this will be a still render, I may try to model it but I think it may be easier to add it in post.

thanks

I would just model the water's surface tension rolling against the glass, and avoid trying to fake it in post. It should be pretty simple in Hex to create as ruled surface from a few curves. Are you planning to render in Carrara?

Here is one way to do it. Just make a cube, the top would be your wave water shader. The side facing the camera would be water shader minus bump and reflection with a solid color, the other sides some shade of dark blue and no reflection. Then use a wave modifier to give it a little curve to the top and smooth your cube to give it the meniscus to simulate the water curve against the glass.

Check it out and see if it helps.

Grendel,

I wish you had posted that a few hours ago.
I came up with about the same thing

thank you

I ran a few test of my own this afternoon, and I think it will work fine. I just created a cube with one of the top edges extruded out slightly. Then like Grendel said, I UV mapped it and created shading domains. so that i can control the different faces

I think I can end up with the look that I want

Either the scale is a bit off, or that boat is about to tie into some serious trouble!

yup he's in trouble.

this was actually going to be my submission in this months Gnomon challenge with the theme "Sea Creature" but, work has caught up with me and I will not be able to finish in time.
I'll finish it for my own pleasure though
