The hall off the troll king

Inspired by a Norwegian fairytail.
The troll's are living inside the mountain. They can only venture outside during the night. The sunlight will make them splitt, and turn into stone.

All parts are made in Hexagon, and rendered in Carrara.
There is only one shader, (and the grass) that still needs some work.
Using a terraine shader.

The carving's are inspired from the wood carvings you can find on Viking buriel ships, jewelry from the viking age, and on the stave churches.

Looks very nice.
Did you do the carvings as a displacement? Or did you model them 'by hand'.

Thanks for the nice words.
The carvings are made by hand. Haven't learnt to use displacements yet, so I did it the easy way.
Might have to join the mountain and the doorframe, into one object. The intersection between the two, just don't looks right.

Here is a litle update.
Have been working on the shader. Trying to give it a high mountain feel.
Old mountains with a lot of rain erosion.

Yet to decide if I'm gone keep the grass or not.

Texture looks good to me, and the doors are great .

Is this the final viewpoint, or just test renders?

I was thinking that the doors are kind of the center of the piece and could look more imposing and impressive.

I think they would be quite big if mountain trolls can get through them. At the moment I don't get that sense of scale.

Perhaps a lower viewpoint with more perspective on the doors?

It started up with a litle doodlin, playing around with "what if I try that" idea, that comes up when you are stuck in traffic on the way to somewhere.
It resulted in the this picture.

-ash- : your right, it looks perhaps more fitted for a dwarf, than a mountain troll king, or as he is known in Norway as "the old man Dovre".

So far it is only test renders.
If I manage to create my vision, and don't get distracted with more of those "what if's" the final gate will actually be smaller, a major part of the picture will be showing his castle : the majestic mountains of western Norway, and his moat (?) the fjords of Norway.
It goes from 1000 m deep fjord to 1000 m high mountain.

And it will not be photorealistic. More of a dreamimage. Romantic view, that was very popular in Norwegian painting in the 19 century.

Think I am in controll of the terrain shader in Carrara.

And a new viewpoint. A litle better, but not quit there yet..

Very nice work on the bas relief, it overpowers the rest however and I might consider either sprucing up the cave with more detail to match it (cracked rocks and tattered/split edges) or vegetation of some sort. Look forward to seeing more.

I am so impressed with those carvings! I have tried such things many times and come up with only garbage! How do you start? From a subdivided plane? A curvy strand of quads? I HAVE TO KNOW!!

Thanks Sailor-Ed.

This is quickly how I made it.

Started with a background image.
1.
Inserted a facet and then building the overall shape. The tool I used was extrude, edge tool, tweek, and bridge. (and connect for a quick subdivide.)
Inserted a line where the shape goes under the other (as seen on 2).
2.
Extruded the shape.
3.
Move the top end of the line in, as it goes under.
4.
Working with points, shaping the crossing.
5.
Subdivide.

On the big carving, I also used fill holes (close) and then connected points so it would subdivide better.

As you can see, I'm continuing to work on the team.. just moved indoor.
(sorry about the doll, it is just to scale it).

Hey,

looks good. Are you actually doing the whole fjord thing?
Didn't know there where any fjords close to Dovre, even if the road down to Bergen from E6 starts somewhere in the vicinity ;)

Btw. "(I) Dovregubbens hall" is called "(In) the Hall of the Mountain King."

I really like the carvings, and the render with the troll with the torch, although with a flame that big some soft shadows would be nice for a final image.
I like the lighting in the image though. A blueish fill light, and some soft shadows and it would probably make a very nice render.

For the painteresque style, are you using Theodor Kittelsen's paintings as inspiration?

Thanks Sardtok.

It is a litle bit of artistic freedom putting the troll king in Bergen, but as you know: Bergen is the capitol of western Norway....

After all, as a royal troll, he has to have a summer home, and Sognefjorden is a perfect place to be in the summer.
Bergen is already full of aristocratic people so he might feel a litle bit left out here.

I am working on it, mostly trying out ideas, and ways to do it.
This is one of my basic setup/view point.

It might take some time, to finish it, I'm just doing it as a hobby.

The style I'm going for is more like Tidemand/Gude (and a litle tiny bit of Kittelsen)

The render with the Troll with the torch, was just for fun. Trying out some what if's..
But I am going to continue with the general idea. Making the interior and some "content for premade content" (clothing for the Troll).
But that is more fitted for Daz forum and not here...

I am very impressed by the carvings on the door as well - think that makes a 3D model stand out!
