40K Dreadnought[Hexagon/Carrara]

While weeding out my laptop from all the 3d "stuff" I seem to accumulate every couple of months I happened upon part of an old video tutorial. It was the Dreadnought model in 3dsMax by 3dPalace. I remember doing this and the LOTR Troll in Max6 and just though I would give it another shot after deleting it.

I also went back to 3dpalace, had not been there for several years, and they have "alot" of video tutorials for modeling. So here is the bottom half of a dreadnought from Warhammer 40K modeled in Hex and a quick render in Carrara.

I've got to add quite a bit to the legs but I need to block out the upper body before I get to far along.

Thanks guys, I used to play 40K when I was younger all the time. A little more progress and I've got most of the upper torso done. Now I just need to figure out what weapons will be on the arm pods.

No problem, my desktop is black so I don't think about it too much since I use my stuff as wallpaper, how about polyloop blue

An odd thing the manage attachements button only shows up once every ten or so times I post, the photo gallery works fine but is there something I need to do? I've emptied my history, cookies but nothing has helped.

I am posting this at 3d-palace as well and they wanted to know how to match the shader, to funny when I told them it was Carrara I think I am the only person there to use it.

Thanks everyone, it's been alot of fun.

Mayito - That was true when close up on the legs, but as I moved the camera further away to frame everything up it blended together quite a bit. I could fix it with an AO pass and lyer it up in PS but I gave this a shot.

Happy - Everyone else has done an imperial dreadnought and they all kind of look the same, as they should really. I had not seen another chaos one until yesterday but it's very different from mine. I went with an ancient chaos unit so I could explore a little more, chaos would lend itself to more individual look and less developed/maintained than imperial units.

I intended him to be more of an individual champion than just another dreadnought.

Here is another update, managed to get the arms on there, and started working on the back engine area. Now it's down to some more wear and tear and nitpicky things.

Thanks Pete, it's funny I am working on a shader tree in XSI that mimic's what i did here in Carrara in three click's and it's a hell of alot more work. At 3dpalace they have the same problem translating it into 3dsMax shader system because theres alot of interest in the particular look.. Sometimes the grass just seems greener.

Have you been using the nodal system in lightwave or the regular shader system. If so what kind of luck have you had with it?

Regular shader at the moment. There is a LOT of things vs. Carrara, which makes things more complicated but richer. In the other hand, there are good books and resources available for LW, which helps a lot

Thanks Noviski, if I had a day or two to work it out, alot of cylinders and gimbals on the lower torso to be controlled. I don't have any plans to animate it right now but it's possible to do in carrara.
