Grendel, can I ask you how you texture your MoI models in Carrara? I imagine you import the .3dm file directly in Carrara and then use some shaders on the various parts. How do you define your shading domains? I find that the hardest part of the work. Thank you in advance for any help |

larsen - Before I used the .3dm import, but know MoI has a great .obj meshing engine for export which I use. It has a good preview of the actual mesh you will be exporting to your render app. There are no shading domains in the connector, just groups of objects with a common shader for the group. As for the defining of shading domains MoI does not support it natively at this time. So if I need a domain area I try to get a good mesh topology in the area I need before I export from MoI. If I have to I'll make a cut in the area I need, to force creation of a natural border to help when selecting. I then set the domains in the vertex modeler and use layers in shader. In the first attached pic I need a cylinder with a diagonal domain and a circular one. So i make three cuts to create the border for easy selection later and hen join everything back together into one piece. In the second pic I convert to .obj for export and I can see that selection will be alot easier using paint selection in the vertex modeler for the circular area and loop selection for the diagonal. This is just a simple example of what you could do if you need to. Last edited by Grendel; 29th January 2007 at 16:53. |

Very clear, thank you very much Grendel! I've used MoI a lot of times and always thought that .3dm was the best import choice in Carrara... I see now that it was not! Just one more question if you have time to answer: When in the vertex modeler do you get trianguled meshes too or you've found a way to preserve ngons? I'm not at all a Carrara master and any advice would be precious for me. Thanks again! P.S. : I've seen some of your works in the MoI forum and they are amazing. |

No problem. There are some options for 3dm import that are handy, but since there is no mesh preview it's kind of trial and error to get what you want, and if it is a large mesh 100+mb then it's time consuming. Just make sure your importing your obj as a vertex primitive in the obj import dialog box and that should help. Carrara does a pretty good job with n-gons. |
