I have ZBrush and I'm currently working with the trial of modo 301. Can't say anything about Mudbox as I've never used it.

IMHO, if you want cutting-edge sculpting you need ZBrush. During my first tests with modo yesterday the sculpting in modo is slower that ZBrush on my PC (Core 2 Duo E6600, 2Gig RAM., Nvidia 7900GS). ZBrush 3.1 is really smooth and easy. On the other hand modo has a more traditional set of tools and what looks to be a great renderer. modo can't handle as many polygons as ZBrush but can produce some good work with the right PC. My 7900GS may be letting me down a bit here (ZB doesn't use the card at all).

But, I've come to the conclusion that you can't have all the options without swapping from one application to another. The secret is to get apps that will all work together without a lot of hassle.

So, if you want to have all the options in one package, including sculpting then modo is probably the way to go. Get the demo and make sure it does what you want.

If your primary goal is sculpting then get ZBrush. It can model, texture and render as well as sculpt. Learning the tool will keep you occupied for ages while you save up for a more all round app to complement it.

I should mention that this is my hobby, I don't use these tools in a professional environment. So this is just my opinion and your mileage may vary

Me, I want them all! Hope this helps.
