Well, my new PC arrived and I took it for a test spin with the solenoid scene and compared it to my old desktop with the same scene.
Old - P4 HT 3Ghz, 2 GB ram -------------- 55 minutes and 58 senonds
New - Dual Quad Xeons 2 Ghz, 4 GB ram -- 5 minutes and 50 seconds

So I am happy as a pig in the mud
