I know I got to this late but hey, sue me.

You can create your own characters in an application like Shade, Silo, Wings, Max, XSI or any of the other modelling tools and then take them into Poser for character setup. The benefit of doing so is that you can then sell your work if you choose too or if you're unable to master your other program's animation systems, Poser provides an alternative. Also, as Nate has shown us, it can be used to aide an artist in nailing a 2D illustration quickly, if they're having a hard time with drawing the human figure. As mentioned earlier, it can also be used for pre-visualization techniques like checking for scale. Poser has loads of uses and shouldn't be dismissed off hand.
